Things you need to know about beam angles
Lighting angles are something we use to measure how our light products distribute their lights, and to what extent a room. We find such things in various candles, light bulbs, and other lighting resources.
In general, a LED beam angle can either be narrow or wide. A narrow LED beam angle means the light beam angle is focused on a certain space of the room. Conversely, their wider counterparts have more biased spectrums. Yet, the light’s intensity is lesser than a lamp product with narrower angles.
We measure the angles of the lamp’s beams from the parts we mount the products. For instance, we measure a downlight beam angle from the top-ceiling parts if we mount the downlight lamps there.

How do we further define and type LED lighting products’ beams’ angles?
Some of the lighting suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and wholesalers, tend to define their products’ angle settings as either narrow, wide, spot, wider-angled, narrower-angled and more.
To put it more specifically, there is the universal terminology and standard in further defining the angles that we refer to as the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) classification.
NEMA itself is the world’s largest association of manufacturers who work in electronic equipment, including the 20W spot beam angle lights supplier in China or other parts of the world.

How do we classify lighting products based on their biases in degrees?

How do we measure LED light angles using some formulas in mind?
The higher the LED biases in degrees, the wider the area coverages of those lighting products. The mathematical formula comes to mind when talking about accurate area coverages.
Once we apply these formulas accurately, we will get fully-illuminated areas that don’t require frequent maintenance. The accurate lighting degrees will also improve the aesthetic feeling of a room and encourage positive moods for people in the room.
Here is the formula for measuring any lighting biases, including the beam angle for recessed lights (or downlights) products:
Angle = 2 * Tan^-1 (Lighting Spread / Light Distance)
Just as with other similar formulas, the spread also has standard deviations. In this mathematical formula, we refer to those deviations as the spill lights that should be no more than 50% of the maximum outputs from both sides of the LED beam angle.
In applying such formulas, we will take a 40*40 square foot room with 35ft ceilings as an example. You would need either one 60-degree downlight at the center of the ceilings or two downlight products of the same degrees, but placed on a separate half of the total ceilings’ heights.
You can consider the building types where you wish to apply the lighting products and their biases when thinking about the ceiling’s heights.
For example, a standard building’s ceilings are around 2.4-2.7 meters. Such things are different from multi-floor commercial buildings that are more than 25 meters. The taller the ceiling heights, the more likely you have to concentrate on either having wider-angled LED products or adding the number of light bulbs.
What are the building types we should consider when choosing the angles of our LED products?
The rooms’ specifications and acknowledging that each room has different purposes are the starting points of considering the products’ angles. Understanding and applying those two crucial points will lead us to choose accurate lighting products, fixtures, reflectance, lumens, and more.
Dividing between residential and commercial uses is one of the common practices in considering the beam angle for recessed lights or other similar products, including the recessed light angle or the downlight beam angle. The most visible difference between residential and commercial buildings lies in their average ceiling heights, which determines the mathematical formula’s results as stated above.
Their settings are also different: Residential places focus on the room-by-room basis, while commercial buildings focus on efficiency in the central area.
Since residential places focus on a room-by-room basis, the recessed lighting beam angle can be narrower than the particular room in most commercial buildings, even though some real-life examples include wide and very wide beam angle examples for both residential and commercial buildings.
Since there are many commercial buildings we can find on the street, we divide the next sections into four categories: Office buildings, restaurants, retail stores, and warehouses.
